Activity Data & Collect Earth

Activity Data & Collect Earth

What is Activity Data?

Activity Data (AD) is the estimated area of each land use type in Belize which is calculated in hectares. For REDD+ purposes, it is the estimation of the amount of forested lands within the country and how these lands change to and from the other land uses over time. Activity Data can be used to estimate deforestation and forest degradation rates and trends, as well as reforestation, changes in agricultural lands and expansion in settlements/urban areas. Activity Data, in conjunction with Emission Factors (EF), plays a vital role in the Forest Reference Emissions Level (FREL) and Greenhouse Gas Inventory emissions estimations.

Collect Earth

As vital of a role that Activity Data plays in REDD+, the methodology used to collect it is just as important. Utilizing satellite imagery, the open source tool called Collect Earth is used to assess Belize’s land uses geospatially. The Collect Earth tool operates on Google Earth, Google Earth Engine, Bing Maps and HERE WeGo maps, which gives the user the ability to do a wholistic and accurate assessment on land use and land use change.
